and gentlemen. i'm al williams, president of the board of directors of san francisco african-american historical and cultural society. on behalf of the society and our co-presenters, the san francisco african-american chamber of commerce, the bayview ymca, senator mark leno's office, the san francisco public library, and the mayor's office of neighborhood services, welcome to the 2013 black history month program. the 2013 black history month theme is "at the crossroads of freedom and equality, the emancipation proclamation and the march on washington." the society is the lineal descendant of the san francisco atheneum. it has been the only san francisco institution that is dedicated to documenting, preservinging and presenting true accounts of the history of people of african descent in san francisco. the society is a membership-based organization. without the hard work of our members and friends, the society wouldn't be able to present programs like today's kickoff. i'd like to take a moment here to thank members of our board of directors and the black history month committee who are here. amon

on the weekend, and it was closed because of the budget cuts. i know that growing up here in san francisco, i grew up playing ball in the neighborhood in the local schoolyard. and if kids and families are not given that opportunity. i think it's a real shame. we have embarked on a project and have had fund-raisers over the last years, that have been very successful. and thank you to the sponsors that helped participate. and wouldn't have happened without all of those involved. and i am glad to say that we have 24 schoolyards opened up and more we hope to come online. and we have a power-point deck, and we have michael and christine carr. and got to honor michael for african history month and for those who have played large in this effort. and we need to give them a huge amount of gratitude. could sfgov-tv put on the slide deck. if we turn to the next page, gavin newsom and hydra mendoza had a program to open up our schoolyards. and when we came in office in 20 2011, i think six or 10 schoolyards are opened up and a need for impetus behind that. this is a partnership between my office and lee'

were talking a little about kind of how san francisco came in in terms of actually ading the officer. more broadly how do you think san francisco compares and what are some of the other cities that are doing really well in terms of open data? >> i should be clear. when san francisco is third, we have a pact. i'll add to that actually. what's great in san francisco is there is not just going to be a chief data officer. there is also the office of civic innovation. jay's team, shannon's team. by having both of those units in place i think there is going to be a really powerful team. because you can't just open up the data. you have to do things like this, where you get the community together or you have people actually talking about it because the demand side, as we were talking about it, will be there because there is going to be someone there. there have to be people working with it who are getting out there. i think this is what this city is going to be really powerful. in terms of other cities doing as well, chicago is doing some really interesting stuff. scary cool stuff. they're

about 30 or 40 entertainment venues in san francisco, new york, and moscow is. i have a technical question about county transfers. -- and lost vegas. i have a technical question about county transfers. right now, there are very few buildings that you can lease in san francisco anymore. this town has gone nuts in the last five or six months. there are no liquor licenses to purchase. i have strong connections with the liquor licenses on line and some of these people. i am sorry that the top of the list. i have 48 license requests that i cannot fail. i have a two-star michelin restaurant that is moving from downtown out into the mission that the only thing i can do is throw a quick 41 on the place because we can -- because i cannot find a 47 or 848 to do it. i would like you -- or a 48 to do it. i would like to think about some injured county transfers. -- enter-county transfers. there are a lot of restaurants that have a million dollar construction costs and cannot find a license and are freaking out. licensing has gone to about 128,000 this month. we assume they will surely go to 1

in class services to the children and families of bay view hunter's point and san francisco. we respectfully request that the commission denies the request so we can move forward. the children of bay view hunter's point and san francisco cannot wait any longer. violence is the leading cause of early mortality in bay view and in my previous position as pediatrician of the bay view center i had the opportunity to see it everyday what the impact is on our kids. our access to mental health services that recognize and treat the repeated trauma that so many of our kids experience and we have an opportunity to do some real healing. we have all of these amazing resources ready to be connected under one roof, but when i am in clinic i have to write down names and put them on a waiting list because we can't get our doors open. this vision was born out of the voices of the families that we serve everyday and we have worked hard to engage with the bay view hunter's point community around all aspects of our project and we have a summary in your packets but i want to speak to the concern

after generation would stay in san francisco. and we had if there is not a tendency for people having to leave the city for work, i think that you will see more families staying and people staying through the whole generation and maybe that is optimism and cultural and economic diversety, i think that as the new jobs are created we create another economy, for support, which would address the concerns about people without college or high school educations, because you know, you have the entertainment industry, hospitality restaurants that are going to be neighborhood serving retail and all of these sorts of jobs, would be applicable, to that particular group, it comes to mind that project where we are not considering today, but the hotel on fourth street which will provide employment for a lot of people who will fit that category and it is just a small hotel, but any hotel that has the effect of providing a lot of service, jobs that are connected with it. and also, it was brought up by the commissioner moore about retrofitting older buildings and what is being done with the pacific tel

and we have been working in san francisco for years. i would like to speak to solutions. we were housing 3450 street. our agency used the building specifically for the clinical staff, our psychologists, our executive director and so forth .. the children didn't maintain in that building and were placed in foster homes in the greater san francisco bay area. in terms of the clinic housed specifically [inaudible] 3451c. the clinic is going to be in 2c or the next building over. at the time it became located at that address the social services and family agency it's what do you call it? family mosaic, was located there. what i want to speak to in terms of the toxins of the bay view and we know there are issues but know that corridor specifically at that location is -- you could say a drive way of trucks going back and forth. our agency we kept the windows closed because of the level of dust that comes from all the construction trucks is massive, so we had to actually wash off the front everyday to deal with that. we also had issues around the creek where the whole complex, the

that the community includes all san francisco ans at the very least and while you certainly have to be cognoscente of the needs of those who happen to be living and working in the area at a particular time, san francisco changes over a period of time. and so we have to weigh, you know, the input in all faction of the cities as to what is most desirable here and it may not be the status quo staying as it is and we acknowledge it by this plan and so that it is not going to be a strictly industrial area and it has not been and it is a mixed use area at best and we have to plan to make it the most servicable and also to realize the benefits of this huge investment with the central subway and other transit that we are putting in there and the need for growth of office space. so trying to weigh these >> i looked at the focus group that you met on and it is a large group and a good group but it is almost entirely san franciscoans from the area. as opposed to getting some focus groups with businesses inside and outside of san francisco. because if you plan to build and increase an office space, maybe you

, february 19th, we were honored to be part of an announcement made by the san francisco giants, which was announcing that anchor brewing company is planning to move its or expand its operations to pier 48 as part of the mission rock development project. this is a huge for the dianth and for the port. it represents a coming around or modernizing of an existing pier for what would have been a historic use and is still a very modern use. and so we are very grateful to the giants for finding such a terrific and local partner and we are looking forward to welcoming them after you get your various approvals hopefully as early as 2014. and that was wonderful news and we commend you for that and thank you for including all of us at the port of the event. our own sadness for the day was that it was not a post 5:00 event, so that we could all enjoy the new product that will be moving to the water front, but i assume that there will be time for that. just another ribbon cutting. >> okay. next what i would like to mention is we are going to have a street closure this friday night beginning at 10
